Dr Joseph Crowley
The Honourable Justice Joseph Crowley was appointed as a judge of the Supreme and National Courts of Papua New Guinea in 2025. He was admitted as a barrister in 2003 and has appeared in courts and tribunals in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Joseph has practiced in a wide range of public law matters including extradition, parole, merits and judicial review, human rights and refugee law.
Joseph has extensive experience in criminal law and is on the Legal Aid Queensland complex cases panel. He has particular experience in miscarriage of justice cases having worked to overturn notorious injustices such as Graham Stafford (Qld), Henry Keogh (SA), Sue Neil Fraser (Tas), Andrew Fitzherbert (Qld), Max Sica (Qld) and Dianne Wilson from Palmerville Station in far north Queensland.
Joseph has an interest in legal education and has taught law to both lawyers and law students in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Nauru. He holds a Doctor of Legal Science. His doctoral thesis was on the development of the laws of new and fresh evidence.
For 75 episodes Joseph co-hosted the popular true crime podcast "Justice Matters - Conversations about crime and punishment". He has a special interest in sports law, having presented papers at conferences and prior to his appointment he sat on the Queensland Touch Football Disciplinary panel.
